(Questo dispaccio i stato riceviito dal Presidente del Governo proyvisorio di Venezia il giorno 10 maggio.) Foreign Office, april 20 1849. Sir. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 4.e Instant, and to assure you in reply that Her Majesty’ s governement have witnessed with great interest, not only the heavy sacrifices which the people of Venice have made during the last twelve months, for the purpose of maintaining the cause which they have expoused, but also the good order which during that period has been preserved within the city. But in regard to the desire expressed by you on behalf of your fellow citizens that Venice should cease to belong to Austria, Her Majesty’s governement can only say that the Treaty of Vienna, to which Great Britain was a party, assigns Venice as a part of the Austrian empire; and that the arrangement proposed by Hie British and French governements to the governement of Austria in August last as the basis of negoliation, did not go to disturb that arrangement of the Treaty of Vienna. No change can be made in the political condition of Venice, except by the content and act of the imperial governement, and that governement has already announced its intention in that respect. Her Majesty’s governement then can only repeal with earnestness the advice which is has recently instructed Her Majesty’s consul general <\t Venice to tender in its name to the governeinent of Venice, namely that the Venetians should lose no time in endeavouring to come to nn amicable arrangement with the Austrian authorities, as to the best means of reestablishing without collision the authority of the Emperor of Austria within the city of Venice.
