Articles : Art. 1". — There shall henceforward be peace and friendship between H. M. the Queen of U. K. of G. Britain and Ireland, and H. M. the Emperor of China. Art. 2. — II. M. the Emperor of China agrees, that British subjects, with families and establishments, shall be allowed to reside, for the purpose of carrying on their inercantilcs pursuits, without molestations or restraint, at the cities and towns of Canton, Amoy, Foochow, Ningpo, and Shanghai: and H. M. the Queen will appoint surintendents, or consular officers, to reside at each of the above-named cities and towns, to be the medium of communication between the Chinese authorities and the said merchants. Art. 3. — It being obviously necessary and desirable that British subjects should have some port wheereat they may careen and refit their ships when required, H. M. the Emperor of China cedes to H. M. the Queen, the island of Hongkong, to be possessed in perpetuity by H. B. M., her heirs and successors, and to be governed by such laws and regulations as II. M. the Queen shall see fit to direct. Art. 4.—The Emperor of China agrees to pay the sum of six millions of dollars, as the value of the opium which was delivered up at Canton in the month of march 1839, as a ransom for the lives of H. M. superintendents and subjects, who had been empriso-ned and threatened vvhith death by the Chinese high officers. Art. 5.— Concerning the Chinese merchants, called hong-mer-chants, or co-hong; and H. I. M. agrees to pay to the B. government the sum of three millions of dollars. AnT. C. — Concerning the expedition : the Emperor of China agrees to pay the sum of twelwc millions of dollars, on account of the expences incurred.
